Imagine living in Norway in the year 870 CE. It is really cold, and good farmland is hard to find. People crowd into the valleys where crops do grow. Food is hard to get. Another bad winter has ruined the crops and starved or frozen the animals. What do you do?
One thing your family might do is try to find a better place. You could sail away in a trading ship, or knörr (k’nurr). You would go through uncharted (not yet mapped) waters. The icy North Atlantic Ocean would be treacherous (dangerous). But the risk could be worth it. You might make it through this winter, but the next one may be worse.
Where do you go, and what do you see there? You may be surprised by what you find.
