The Vikings made their biggest impact on the world between the late 8th century CE and the late 11th century CE. They lived in the countries we know today as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. They traveled to find land, gold, silver, and people to enslave. Along the way they discovered Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. They were probably the first Europeans to land in North America. But they often left a trail of terror behind them.
The Vikings were also called Northmen or Norsemen. Some think of them as barbarians (uncivilized people). Others say the Vikings were smart and took advantage of any situation.
