PEANUTS AND GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER
(1864–1943)
George Washington Carver was born into slavery in Missouri. Even so, he became an important American scientist and educator.
Carver learned to read and write at home. When he was ten, he attended a school in Kansas. Many years later, Carver was the first Black person to graduate from Iowa State University. In 1896, Carver became a teacher at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. He did a lot of research with plants.
Carver did experiments with peanuts and sweet potatoes. He found different ways to use these plants. His work helped make peanuts an important crop.
