The Caribbean is a beautiful place with a rich culture. It sits in the tropics, near the equator. The Caribbean is also called the West Indies. It has three main groups of islands: the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the Lesser Antilles.
It also includes thousands of islands, reefs, and cays. Cays are small islands made of coral or sand. Some islands are so tiny that no one lives on them. Others, like Cuba and Jamaica, are quite large.
If you sailed from island to island, you would hear many languages. People speak English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Haitian Creole, and Papiamento. Papiamento is a mix of Portuguese, Spanish, and Creole.
