A place of incredible beauty and rich cultural heritage, the Caribbean is nestled in the tropics, the area near the equator. Also known as the West Indies, the Caribbean consists of three main groups of islands: the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the Lesser Antilles.
In all, it includes thousands of islands, islets, reefs, and cays, or small islands made of coral or sand. Some islets, or small islands, are so tiny that no one lives on them. Some islands, like Cuba and Jamaica, are quite large.
Imagine if you were to sail from island to island. Depending on where you went, you could hear people speaking English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Haitian Creole, or Papiamento. That’s a mixture of Portuguese, Spanish, and Creole.
There’s a lot more to learn about the Caribbean. So let’s set sail!
