The first official American flag was established in 1777 and has since become one of our nation’s most recognized symbols of patriotism.
Symbols stand for important ideas or beliefs. While some symbols are tangible, such as flags and statues, others are intangible yet still evoke strong emotions. These include songs, poems, and mottoes. The practice of singing our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner,” at sporting events serves as a reminder of our national unity. Even when citizens disagree about policy decisions, they remain united in their devotion to the country.
