The first American flag was created in 1777. Since then, the flag has been one of our country’s most important symbols.
Symbols stand for special ideas or beliefs. Some symbols can be seen and touched, like flags and statues. Other symbols cannot always be seen or touched, but they affect how we feel. These include songs, poems, and mottoes. Many sports events start with “The Star Spangled Banner,” our national song. This reminds us that we are one country. Even if we disagree about what our country should do, we all love our country.
