The first official American flag was created in 1777. Since then, the flag has been one of our country’s best-known symbols of patriotism.
Symbols stand for important ideas or beliefs. Some symbols can be seen and touched, such as flags and statues. Other symbols cannot always be seen or touched, but they affect our feelings. They include songs, poems, and mottoes. Many sporting events start with the singing of our national anthem, or song, “The Star Spangled Banner.” This reminds us that we are united as a country. Even if we disagree with one another about what our country should do, we are united in our love of the country.
