Rip, snap, bang! That’s the sound of a farmer picking corn by hand. The farmer rips open the husk with a hook. Then, the farmer snaps off the corn ear and tosses it into a wagon. The process goes on over and over again, from sunrise to sundown.
Corn is this farmer’s crop. Crops are plants grown on a farm. Each crop has a growing season. A growing season is the time it takes to plant and grow a crop until it is ready to pick.
In the past, most farmwork was done with muscle power. That power came from people as well as horses, mules, and oxen. The animals pulled plows. Farmers also depended on rain to water crops. Sometimes they lost their crops if too little or too much rain fell during the growing season.
