Who were the conductors and stationmasters who risked their lives to help others?
Some were ordinary farmers and shopkeepers. Others were respected ministers and merchants. Most were African Americans—free blacks living in the North or former enslaved persons who risked recapture to return south to help others escape. Fellow slaves who remained behind also played an important role in assisting their brethren to reach freedom.
