Who were the conductors and stationmasters who risked their lives to help others?
Some were ordinary farmers and shopkeepers. Others were respected ministers and merchants. Most were African Americans. They were either free blacks living in the North or former enslaved persons who risked getting caught again to return south and help others escape. Slaves who stayed behind also played an important role in helping others to reach freedom.
