What Was the Underground Railroad?

There were no rails to ride on the Underground Railroad. There were no trains, and there were no tickets.

In fact, it wasn’t a railroad at all. It wasn’t even under the ground. But it was hidden, and it was secret. The Underground Railroad was a secret network of African Americans and whites who helped runaway enslaved persons from the South escape to freedom. Nobody knows exactly how many people “rode” the Underground Railroad or exactly how many helped them escape. What we do know is that runaways and the people who helped them showed courage and took risks. Step aboard to hear a story of bravery, danger, and the determination to fight for freedom.
