There were no rails to ride on the Underground Railroad. No trains. No tickets.
In fact, it wasn’t a railroad at all. It wasn’t even under the ground. But it was hidden, and it was secret. The Underground Railroad was a network of African Americans and whites who helped runaway enslaved persons from the South escape to freedom. Nobody knows exactly how many people “rode” the Underground Railroad. No one knows exactly how many people helped enslaved persons escape. What we do know is that runaways and the people who helped them showed courage and took risks. Step aboard to hear a story of bravery, danger, and the willingness to fight for freedom.
