Who were the conductors and stationmasters who risked their lives to help others?
Some were farmers and shopkeepers. Others were ministers and businessmen. Most were African Americans. Some were free blacks living in the North. Others were former enslaved persons who risked getting caught again to return south and help others escape. Slaves who stayed behind also played a big part in helping runaways to freedom.
