The artist Claude Monet (mo-NAY) was born in France in 1840.
At first, Monet drew pictures of people. He also drew cartoons. Later, he painted outdoor scenes. Most of all, he loved to paint flowers and water. Monet even built a pond next to his home. Around it, he planted willows, irises, and bamboo. He added water lilies that floated on the surface.
