The surface (top) of a pond might look clear and shiny. Or it might look green and dull, like pea soup.
Some pond animals eat plants called algae (AL-jee). Some kinds of algae are very small. Millions can fit in a spoonful of water. Algae grow and spread in the water. They can make the pond look green. They can even form a green layer on top of the pond.
