Waters full of fish. Forests with animals you’ve never seen. Indigenous (Native) peoples who are friendly – and some who are not. It’s the late 1500s, and this is a new world. Your new world.
You’re a trader from France. Your village feels very far away. But all you can see is a bright future. You get rich by selling beaver fur to European merchants. Everyone wants beaver hats. You catch lots of cod fish near the coast. French traders work with the Indigenous Huron people to trade fur. Together, you help build New France, a colony, or land, controlled by a foreign country.
It all started because European kings wanted to find the Northwest Passage to Asia. Early explorers never found this path because it was frozen most of the year. Instead, they found what would become Canada.
