Through the 1800s and early 1900s, huge numbers of immigrants continued to arrive in the United States.
This caused a big increase in the country’s population. Population is the total number of people who live in a place. In 1800, around 5 million people lived in the United States. In 1900, there were 76 million people in the country. Today, the country has a population of over 340 million.
Where Americans live has changed a lot over the years. Until the late 1800s, most people lived in rural areas, or in the countryside. Many of them lived and worked on farms. By 1920, more Americans lived in urban areas, or cities, than on farms. By the 1950s, many Americans were moving to the suburbs, towns or small cities near an urban area.
