Through the 1800s and early 1900s, many immigrants came to the United States. This made the country’s population grow a lot. Population means the total number of people who live in a place.
In 1800, about 5 million people lived in the United States. In 1900, there were 76 million people. Today, over 340 million people live in the country.
Where Americans live has changed over time. Until the late 1800s, most people lived in rural areas, or in the countryside. Many people lived and worked on farms. By 1920, more Americans lived in cities than on farms. By the 1950s, many Americans were moving to the suburbs. Suburbs are towns or small cities near a bigger city.
