Milk, almonds, grapes, beef, lettuce, strawberries, and tomatoes have lots in common. Not only are they all foods, but they’re all foods that you can find in homes across the country.
They have something else in common, too. These foods are some of California’s biggest farming exports – products from one place that are sold in another place. The farming industry grew quickly in California. (An industry is a collection of similar businesses.) The state’s fertile valleys made a natural home for large farms, while the warmth and sunshine that covers much of the state made it possible to farm year-round.
