It takes a lot of work to bring water to where people need it. It can take just as much work to keep water away from where it shouldn’t be. As the farming industry grew in California, so did the need for water.
Many areas of California are dry. Farms need a lot of water to grow crops. Other industries also need water, and so do growing cities. People depend on clean water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. In other areas, heavy rains can flood the land. How people use water can change how water flows in other places. As an important resource, water has led to conflict and struggle in California more than once.
