A lot of buildings today are made to survive an earthquake, but that wasn’t always the case. As the 20th century began, Californians faced danger and hardship of different kinds. Natural disasters like earthquakes, plus wars and lack of work, made life in California hard. Time and progress helped the state recover from these hardships. By the end of the century, California had emerged stronger and more important than ever to the nation’s economy.
