In war, the place where fighting takes place is called the front.
During the Great War, the trenches of France were called the Western Front. The Eastern Front was a large area mostly in Russia, where Russia fought the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. These were the two main fronts. There was also fighting on the border between Austria-Hungary and Italy. Other fronts included the Middle East, Africa, and Mesopotamia.
