In wartime, the place where armies are fighting is called a front.
The Great War had two main fronts. The Western Front was the trenches in France. The Eastern Front was mostly in Russia, where the Russians fought Germany and Austria-Hungary. Another front was on the border between Austria-Hungary and Italy. There were also fronts in the Middle East, Africa, and Mesopotamia.
