In wartime, a front is where fighting takes place.
During the Great War, there were two main fronts. The trenches in France were called the Western Front. The Eastern Front was mostly in Russia, where Russia fought the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. There was also fighting on the border between Austria-Hungary and Italy. Other fronts included the Middle East, Africa, and Mesopotamia.
