To build a true flying machine, Orville and Wilbur needed wings that could lift a plane into the air. They also needed an engine that was light but powerful, and a way to steer a plane in flight.
Others had begun to solve the problems of wing and engine design. But until the Wright brothers came along, no one had discovered how to control an aircraft.
