In order to build a true flying machine, the Wrights needed wings that could lift a plane into the air. They needed an engine that was light but powerful.
They also needed a way to steer in flight. Others had begun to solve the problems of wing and engine design. But until the Wright brothers came along, no one had figured out how to control an aircraft.
