To build a true flying machine, the Wrights needed three main things.
One, wings that could lift a plane into the air. Two, a light, but powerful engine. Three, a way to steer a plane while flying. Others had begun to solve the problems of wing and engine design. But the Wright brothers were the first to figure out how to control an aircraft.
