New England is known for its historic small towns. Many have a town center with churches and public buildings arranged around a grassy area called a common or green. New England got its name because many of its original European settlers were from England. They often named the places where they settled after places in England. For example, the oldest college in the U.S. is in Cambridge (pronounced CAME-bridge), Massachusetts. That city was named after Cambridge, England, where there’s an even older famous university.
