The Northeast
Some people say the best things come in small packages. When it comes to the Northeast, they might be right! This smallest region of the United States packs a boatload of diversity – from people to geography, weather, and industry. From tiny rural communities to some of the biggest cities in the nation.
Traveling across the region, kids will explore the mountains, valleys, plains, and lakes that culminate in the never-boring coastline and its many harbors. They’ll discover how the earliest residents were able to meet their needs without supermarkets, malls, or online shopping. They’ll also peer into the lives of European settlers, including events that led to the birth of the nation.
Kids fascinated by the backstory of major events will want to immerse themselves in the details of the Industrial Revolution as it began and developed in this region. Textile mills, cotton mills, the steamboat, the Erie Canal, telegraphs, telephones, electricity: Kids will be amazed at the breadth and depth of inventions and innovations that took place here. Whether they live in Boston, have dreamed about visiting it, or are just finding out about this amazing city, they’ll enjoy the vicarious experience of seeing how it embraces past and present simultaneously. Then they’ll hop on a train to tour the states of the Northeast – from New England to the Middle Atlantic – a tour that culminates in a large handful of impress-your-friends facts about the Boston Marathon, 9/11, and a host of people whose names they may already know. This is a unit kids will not want to miss.
