Imagine a place where the buildings are so tall that you can’t see the tops. As you stand on the sidewalk, craning your neck, crowds of people rush past you on all sides.
This is New York City, the biggest city in the U.S. Those very tall buildings are called skyscrapers. New York is one of the world’s leading cities for many industries. These include banking, publishing, fashion, and entertainment. People come to New York and other big cities for jobs and other opportunities. They come from all over the world. This means that New York City is home to people of many races, religions, and cultures. In one borough, or part of the city, called Queens, more than 130 different languages are spoken.
