Observatories are places to study the sky.
The oldest surviving one, South Korea’s Cheomseongdae Observatory, was built around A.D. 647. With just their unaided eyes, sky watchers there could see about 10,000 stars each night. Using giant reflecting telescopes, today’s astronomers can see many billions.
