- from South America
In spite of having the word “South” in its name, South America spans parts of three hemispheres – the western, the northern, and the southern.
The entire continent is not only south of the United States but also east of most of it.
South America is home to a handful of global firsts, or near-firsts. For example, it’s where you’ll find the world’s highest waterfall. The world’s largest river basin. The world’s longest mountain chain. The world’s driest desert (not located at one of the poles). And the world’s largest natural mirror.
South America may be “only” the fourth-largest continent in size, but its land and water are packed with all kinds of amazing phenomena. This geographic journey stops at mountains and highlands, river basins and coastal plains.
