South America spans parts of three hemispheres. They are the western, the northern, and the southern hemispheres.
The whole continent is south of the United States. But it’s also east of most of it.
South America is home to many firsts. Or near-firsts. For example, it’s where you’ll find the world’s highest waterfall. The world’s largest river basin. The world’s longest mountain chain. The world’s driest desert (not located at one of the poles). And the world’s largest natural mirror.
South America may be “only” the fourth-largest continent in size. But its land and water have all kinds of amazing phenomena. This geographic journey stops at mountains. It passes by highlands. It goes to river basins and coastal plains.
