What do snails, turtles, and crabs have in common? They carry their houses with them wherever they go.
Some human groups do this as well. Called nomads, these people don’t have permanent homes. Instead they travel from place to place, often bringing their homes with them. Many nomadic peoples are herders, who keep constantly on the move searching for pasture for their animals. Others hunt animals or gather wild plants for food. All of these groups need shelters that are lightweight, small enough to carry, and easy to pack and unpack. Today, many houses on the move belong to families out to see the world. These trailers, RVs, and other mobile homes serve as a home away from home.
