There were two very different types of Plains villages.
One type was home to the nomadic tribes, such as the Blackfeet, Crow, Kiowa, and Comanche. They created temporary villages of tipis as they moved about following the buffalo herds. The other type was built by farming tribes, such as the Mandan, Hidatsa, Pawnee, and Osage. These tribes lived in permanent villages of earth lodges. When they went out on the Plains a few times a year to hunt buffalo, they took tipis with them.
