A long time ago, people who sailed the seas took huge risks. That was before all the continents had been found. It was before all the oceans had been explored. It was before science made deep-sea research possible.
Those lucky enough to make it home told tales of new lands and shorter sea routes. They brought back exotic goods. They also had stories of sea monsters and dragons.
Where did these stories come from? Throughout history, people have created myths and legends to help explain things they could not understand: How did that island disappear? What made the ocean so treacherous? Who or what capsized that ship?
To this day, many mysteries remain about the seas. These mysteries are guarded by waters that are often wild and perilous, cold and dark, and untamable.
