The Roman Catholic Church was the only Christian religion in Europe in the Middle Ages.
It was the most important institution in most people’s lives. It was as rich and powerful as kings and emperors. Like the rest of society, the Church was split along class lines. The pope, who headed the Church, and his bishops all lived very well. But many village priests were poor. They weren’t even well educated.
