The Roman Catholic Church was the only Christian religion in Europe in the Middle Ages.
It was the most important institution in the lives of most people. The Church was as rich and powerful as kings and emperors. Like all medieval society, the Church was split along class lines. The pope, or head of the Church, and the bishops under him all lived very well. But many village priests were poor and not well educated.
