A manor was the land controlled by a noble.
It included the manor house, or castle, plus a village, a church, and the nearby fields. Kings and the most powerful lords lived in castles, and so did some of the knights who fought for them. People started building wooden castles in the 800s. Many were built or rebuilt with stone, starting around 1100. Wooden castles burned down too easily. As time went by, castles became fancier and more comfortable. But even the best ones didn’t have the comforts we take for granted at home, like lights and running water.
