A manor was the land a noble controlled.
His manor house, or castle, stood on this land. So did a village, a church, and the fields around them. Castles were home to kings, their most powerful lords, and some of the knights who fought for them. People built wooden castles starting in the 800s. Around 1100, many started being built or rebuilt with stone. Wood ones burned too easily. As time went on, castles became fancier and more comfortable. But they still didn’t have things we take for granted at home, like lights and running water.
