Today, the Great Wall wouldn’t be of much military value. But in the days before tanks, planes, and grenades, the wall was a marvel of military might.
It was more than a match for the weaponry of centuries past, which included bows, arrows, spears, and swords—all wielded by soldiers on foot or horseback. And the wall was more than just a wall. Fortresses, watchtowers, and beacon towers were part of the great structure that ran for thousands of miles.
