Today, the Great Wall wouldn’t be very useful in a battle. But in the days before tanks, planes, and grenades, it was a great defense.
The wall was more than a match for the weapons of centuries past. Those included bows, arrows, spears, and swords—all carried by soldiers on foot or horseback. And the wall was more than just a wall. Fortresses, watchtowers, and beacon towers were part of the great structure that ran for thousands of miles.
