One of the most magnificent structures on Earth arose in the East Asian nation of China many centuries ago. Called the Great Wall, it dates back to the Ming Dynasty, which lasted from 1368 to 1644. (Dynasties were ruling families that passed power from one generation to the next.)
Like earlier walls that were built in China, the purpose of the Great Wall was to keep out invaders. These tribes wandered the arid grasslands north of China’s borders. They cast a jealous eye on the Chinese way of life. Charging into China’s cities on horseback, they stole grain, pottery, fabrics, and other goods.
The Great Wall snakes over mountain peaks, plunges into deep valleys, and crosses wide rivers. Parts of the wall are now in ruins or have disappeared altogether. But at one time, guard stations, signal towers, and even ornate temples were spread across it.
Let’s go on a fascinating trip to one of the wonders of the world.
