One of the most amazing structures on Earth was built centuries ago. Called the Great Wall, it is in the East Asian nation of China. The wall dates back to the Ming Dynasty. A dynasty is a family that passes power from one generation to the next. The Ming Dynasty lasted from 1368 to 1644.
The Chinese had built walls before. Like those walls, the Great Wall was made to keep out invaders. These tribes wandered the dry grasslands north of China’s borders. They wanted what the Chinese had. Riding into cities on horseback, they stole grain, pottery, fabrics, and other goods.
The Great Wall winds over mountain peaks and dives into deep valleys. It even crosses wide rivers. Parts of it are now in ruins. Other parts have totally disappeared. But for a long time, guard stations, signal towers, and grand temples were spread across it.
