French and Indian War
We, in the United States, know it as the French and Indian War, but Europeans and French Canadians may call it the War of Conquest, the Seven Years’ War, or the Fourth Intercolonial Conflict. Whatever the name, the French and Indian War unit offers both a conceptual overview and an in-depth look at the people and motivations underlying a conflict that, at its core, is not so different from conflicts in modern times.
Kids begin their exploration with a deep dive into the geography, resources, and people of the Ohio valley. Who will control this region, so rich in natural wealth–the Indigenous population? The British? The French? The competing interests of each group are highlighted as the ingredients for war.
Next, kids discover how the war literally begins. History buffs will enjoy following the ups and downs of the conflict to its conclusion with the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and the Royal Proclamation of the same year. The details of these events are ripe for helping kids analyze and judge the principles involved. Along the way, they’ll encounter key people, songs, and images still in the popular culture today–Benjamin Franklin’s viral cartoon of a rattlesnake chopped into pieces with the caption “Join or Die”; the popular song “Yankee Doodle”; and so much more. As they conclude the unit, kids will come to understand the reason Britain imposed taxes that ignited revolution; the origin of the military’s present-day manual for guerilla warfare; and where Cajun food comes from. All fascinating facts from our shared history.
