Powhatan captured John Smith in 1607, and many years later, Smith wrote that Pocahontas had saved his life.
He said he was about to be clubbed to death when Pocahontas begged her father to spare him and threw herself across his body. Some historians wonder whether this ever happened. Others think Smith may have been mistaken and was not in danger of death. They think that having his head placed on a stone might have been part of an adoption ceremony.
