In 1607, Powhatan captured John Smith. Many years later, Smith wrote that Pocahontas had saved his life.
He said he was about to be clubbed to death. She begged her father to spare him and even threw herself across his body. Some historians wonder if this really happened. Others think Smith may have been wrong and was not about to die. They think that having his head placed on a stone might have been part of an adoption ceremony.
