In 1607, John Smith was captured by Powhatan. Many years later, he wrote that Pocahontas had saved his life.
He said he was about to be clubbed to death when Pocahontas pleaded with her father to spare him and threw herself across his body. Some historians question whether this really happened. Others think Smith may have been mistaken and was not in danger. They think that having his head placed on a stone might have been part of an adoption ceremony.
