The Boundary Waters is a vast freshwater wilderness in the Upper Midwest. It runs 150 miles along Minnesota’s border with Canada.
North of the border, the wilderness is called the Quetico. In the United States, the Boundary Waters covers more than a million acres. This part of the Superior National Forest is home to ducks, loons, moose, elk, bald eagles, bears, and other wildlife.
Its official name is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Motorboats are not allowed on the BWCAW’s 1,100-plus lakes. About 250,000 people visit to canoe and camp here each year. Trips can last a day, a week, a month, or longer. The Boy Scouts of America have a permanent camp nearby.
